Projects

Recent D3D projects include the following case studies that illustrate the breadth of our digital 3D theater services.

FILM PRODUCTIONS

Waking the T. rex: The Story of SUE This signature 3D film was produced for the Field Museum in Chicago and released on the 10 year anniversary of the Field's acquisition of the famous Sue T. rex specimen.  The film celebrates Sue's story and provides Field visitors with a special appreciation for the trials and tribulations Sue faced, evidenced by the marks and scars written on her bones.  Waking the T. rex is an engaging companion experience to the iconic exhibition as well as a popular stand-alone dinosaur movie distributed worldwide.  This case study explores the business of signature film production for a destination venue as well as creating brand extensions via worldwide distribution of 3D content and educational supplements.  Read more...

THEATER CONSTRUCTION & TOURS

The Field Museum.  The Field Museum worked with D3D to integrate a new, permanent theater into existing exhibition space.  Their Ernst & Young 3D theater has become one of the most popular and profitable attractions in the museum.  In the first year along, they proceeded to shatter single-theater US box office records for Dinosaurs Alive before partnering again with D3D to pursue the production of a signature dinosaur movie of their own: Waking the T. rex: The Story of Sue.  This case study explores the benefits of a permanent theater addition, new construction, sponsorship, and signature film production.  Read more...

San Diego Natural History Museum.  SDNHM marked one of the first, truly giant screen digital 3D conversions.  The former 870 large-format film theater converted to Dolby 3D in October 2009 and the upgrade has been met with a remarkably overwhelming response.  Capture rates are as high as 90%, even with a 2D IMAX theater a stone’s throw from the museum.  This success story is one that every museum should hear!  This case study explores giant screen 3D conversions, theater vs. “experience” shared sponsorship, ticket bundling models, and competition with nearby venues.  Read more...

King Tut Exhibition.  D3D Cinema, in collaboration with Giant Screen Films and Arts & Exhibitions International (AEI), is proud to tour the Dolby Digital 3D theater experience with King Tut, the most successful exhibition in the world.  Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs (alternatively titled Egypt3D) is the official 3D film of the Tutankhamen exhibition.  D3D has pioneered this travelling digital 3D experience, integrating cinema-quality theaters into existing auditoriums and building new, temporary theater venues from the ground up.  This case study explores travelling exhibition theaters, auditorium retrofits, and temporary theater construction.  Read more...
