In recent times we all have been witness to a spate of natural disasters, not only in the U.S., but also around the world. Hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, floods, earthquakes and drought have wreaked havoc, prompting the affected governments and communities to call for help. In 2008, there were over 100 national disasters recorded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the U.S. alone. Last year, the USAID responded to 77 declared disasters in 57 countries affecting 94 million people.
Most major disasters result in a coordinated effort of highly trained rescue teams using military assets for humanitarian purposes, and aid workers from various non-governmental agencies such as the Red Cross. RESCUE will explore the training rigors and physical and mental preparation needed by those who risk their lives in some of the most extreme conditions for countless individuals they don’t even know -- both in their own countries and abroad. We will also accompany our team of rescuers on real time operations as they demonstrate for audiences around the world the higher purpose often served by governments and their militaries in the service of humanity. International response to Haiti's disaster will be among those rescues featured.
Although RESCUE is at its core a human drama, science education will also be integral -- as we investigate the science behind natural disasters and the skills and technology to predict, and effectively react to them. Ultimately, RESCUE will deliver an uplifting message, and an exciting IMAX-scale adventure featuring real world heroes performing tasks unthinkable for the vast majority of filmgoers.
