In May the GSF production team returned to the remote corners of Saint Lawrence Island to continue shooting for its upcoming, yet-to-be-named film. Directed by Academy-Award nominated and large-format veteran filmmakers Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell, the production explores how Indigenous communities and the iconic animals of the far north are adapting to changing sea ice conditions. Returning to the same remote Yupik villages where rare footage was captured 50 years ago, the film reveals environmental and cultural change over time while celebrating the resilience of the Inuit people on the frontlines of a warming arctic.
The film is a co-production with the Native communities of Sivuquaq (Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska), with major support from the National Science Foundation and in partnership with the Tribal Youth Media Initiative. Up next: filming massive walrus migration routes and haul outs along the Bering coast.
